Lately I have been re-reading some sections of the “motivational bible? by Napoleon Hill called “Think and grow rich?. I must say, that it never seizes to amaze me how this book written at the beginning of 20th century still 100% holds the relevance until this very day. Talk about timeless principles!

The section which caught my eye this time was the one describing The 30 Major Causes of Failure – How many of these are holding You back? I am yet to find a similar list so competently and entirely summing up the reasons behind failures of so many enterprising individuals. Few of my “favorites? from the list:

  • Lack of a well-defined purpose in life
There is no hope for success for the person who does not have a central purpose, or definite goal, at which to aim. Ninety-eight out of every hundred [people] has no such aim! Perhaps this was the major cause of failure.
  • Lack of ambition to aim above mediocrity
We offer no hope for the person who is so indifferent as not to want to get ahead in life, and is not willing to pay the price.
  • Lack of persistence
Most of us are good “starters? but bad “finishers? of everything we begin. Moreover people are prone to give up at the first sign of defeat. There is no substitute for persistence. The persistent person discovers that “Old Man Failure? finally becomes tired and goes away. Failure cannot cope with persistence.
  • Negative personality
There is no hope of success for the person who repels people through a negative personality. Success comes through the application of power, and power is attained through the cooperative effort of other people. A negative personality will not induce cooperation.
  • Over-caution
The person who takes no chances generally hat to take whatever is left when others have finished choosing. Over-caution is as bad as under-caution. Both are extremes to be guarded against. Life itself is filled with the element of chance.
  • Intentional dishonesty
There is no substitute for honesty. One may be temporarily dishonest by force of circumstances over which one has no control, without permanent damage. But there is no hope for people who are dishonest by choice. Sooner or later, their deeds will catch up with them, and they will pay by loss of reputation, and perhaps even loss of liberty.

And the list goes on, as I said it includes 30 items after all. Needless to say that I for one, while not considering myself a failure, can certainly on the list see number of causes posing the biggest threats to my future business success. What about you?

For those who haven’t yet done so, visit your closest book shop or public library and try to get a hold of the source of above mentioned ideas, the book “Think And Grow Rich? by Napoleon Hill.

Not so long ago I came across an interesting article put to together over at Money Walks. In there the author shows a list of highly successful people who, never managed to finish the college. That got me thinking, that the success of those (and similar) individuals could be perhaps used much more often as a motivation tool to all those thinking that their own obstacles on the way to success are just too high to overcome.

So what kind of personalities have made it onto this “college dropout billionaires? list? Let’s see:

  • Bill Gates (does anything else need to be said to introduce? No, I did not think so)
  • Paul Allen (Microsoft co-founder)
  • Michael Dell (founder of Dell Computers)
  • Kirk Kerkorian (father of the whole Las Vegas idea, many said could not be realized)
  • Stanley Ho (casino mogul from Macao)
  • Steve Jobs (Mr. Apple Computers)
  • Ralph Lauren (creator of Polo Ralph Laure fashion brand)
  • Richard Branson (founder and tireless enthusiast behind the Virgin imperium)

The list is by no means complete and I am sure, that there is many more similar high achievers who don’t feature any kind of credible educational institution on their CV. However I think that the point is very much made ie. anybody with enough will power, focus and dedication can achieve pretty much anything he puts his mind into regardless of the “well meant? discouraging voices he may be hearing on the way.

So if you despair and keep thinking, that you simply won’t get the break you deserve, take a list from the book of above mentioned. Pick any of them as a mentor, learn the ways he became successful and try to use such rules and recipes on your own way to success.

Word of caution though to prevent potential misunderstandings: In no way am I implying that dropping out from the college increases your chances to become successful in your professional career. Quite the contrary. However what I do want to point out is, that the steps to success can be learned and success can be achieved by anyone regardless of the education, age, family or ethnic background.

In the real, non-virtual world the old truth is telling us that if one plays with fire he/she will get burned. My own variation of that saying applicable to the bloggosphere would need to go something like “if you start a blog and network with other bloggers, you will get tagged!? And so it happened to me. Finally I must say. :)

After few months of running my beloved Sound Of Gold, one of the good people of Breathing Prosperity, Shauna, has pinged me with the tag to participate in OptimistLab’s game called How I raise my vibes (read the rules there). As you can see, a topic, perhaps rather soul searching for some.

The top spots on my list of “vibe-raisers? would need to be occupied by (in no particular order):

Family and friends
The people I love and hang around most are the ones, who have the powers to raise my vibes in no time. Most probably because they know me so well its scary and always know which button to push in order for me to regroup.

Sports and exercise
A real good hard workout or long run in a park works for me every time. I am not sure if that’s the deep mental focus required by most of the physical sport activities, the physical pain and exhaustion or just the related endorphin chemistry of the brain, but it works for me without a fail. Exhausted, but happy with a clear head, I am able to refocus on what is really important and suppress the creeping negativity. On top of that, keeping in a good physical shape somehow also transpires into feeling good about myself and the things I do. If you feel good about yourself hardly anything can bring you down.

Fine dining
Call me simple but a very basic act of enjoying a quality meal in pleasant environment surrounded by interesting people can fill me up with a great portion of happiness and satisfaction about this world. Needless to say it often provides that much required soothing effect during the tougher periods in life. Word of caution though: this “vibe-raiser? should only be exercised in close coordination with the one just above :)

Appreciation for my work
I think I am not the only one who likes to be praised for his doings. Seeing that other people feel, understand and appreciate things I do is one of the greatest sources of motivation I found to date. In my mind, such appreciation tackles head on one of my biggest life “fears?: uselessly wasting the time given to me and growing old without even leaving some positive mark behind.

Music
No need to reinvent the wheel, let’s just say, that somehow the right tune at the right time holds enough strength to get me up on my “positive feet? no matter how strong a blow had I received. I am fairly certain, that most of you have similar experiences.

And that is my little list. Now looking around at other game entries, I see that most of the participants approached the topic from perhaps much more motivational angle than I have. So enjoy the variety.
